Chris Watson: Okeanos

From making experimental industrial music (Cabaret Voltaire) to recording sounds for David Attenborough’s BBC wildlife television programmes, and World of Warcraft game, one thing unifies the career of influential British sound artist and field recordist Chris Watson: the power of sound. Watson is one of the world’s greatest nature sound recordists. From the North Pole and South Pole to the forests of Congo and deserts, he has done some of the most unique and challenging projects in capturing the sounds of wildlife and natural phenomena. He has released several albums on field recordings, e.g. Stepping into the Dark (Award of Distinction at the 2000 Prix Ars Electronica), or the acclaimed Weather Report. Last year he brought Okeanos, a vivid collage of his recordings from the world’s seas, to the London Contemporary Music Festival. Okeanos is a multi-channel sound performance that will play in complete darkness, celebrating the songs, rhythms and music of the oceanic depths.
